You influence the world
A psychologist from the University of Chicago wrote a book about the contagion of behavior in social networks. He discovered that people's behavior not only affected the people they were around, but affected the people around the people they were around, and the people around the people who were around the people who were around the people. Serving others has three levels of influence beyond the person served. That is more power than some leaders wield.
Service to others, shaped by the intellect and the spirit (care and love), is the highest spiritual path. When you combine these, your service takes on the quality of leadership.
If you are not actually in-charge, you can at least set a good example to emulate.
