Growing skillful

Harry Palmer, author of the Avatar MaterialsOpen Quote

Life is change.

I don't think you would be happy with any state of mind or experience that never changed.

Avatar® is more about managing change than stopping it. The expected results of The Avatar Course are skills using a set of tools. Skills tend to last a long time. I can still ride a bike, still swim, and these are things that I learned long ago.

Growing Skillful

The reason that some people never grow skillful is because they think that knowing how to do something is enough. Skill is the result of knowing plus practice. If what you practice is wise, such as learning to control your mind, you will not only improve your own life, but you will improve others' lives as well. Isn't it nice when what you practice makes the whole world better?

A spiritual practice is becoming skillful in doing those actions that bring peace of mind. Many people know what the actions are:

  • relaxation
  • deliberate thinking
  • multi-viewpoint perspective
  • contentment
  • cheerful temperament
  • good will
  • giving
  • etc.,

but only a few have practiced these actions and turned them into skills.
